How do I figure out what TV to buy?

Start by fixing your budget and room size, then choose screen size, panel type (LED/QLED/OLED), 4K resolution with good HDR, and the right smart features for your apps and devices. Treat it like a checklist so you do not get distracted by marketing terms and useless extras.

Room, distance, and size

Measure how far you sit from the TV and use that to pick size: many guides suggest roughly dividing your viewing distance in inches by about 1.2–1.6 to get an ideal screen size (bigger room → bigger screen). If the “ideal” size is too expensive, go for the largest size you can comfortably fit and afford in that space.

Resolution and panel type

For a new TV in 2025, focus on 4K; 8K content is still rare and not worth the extra price for most people. Between panel types, standard LED is cheapest, QLED or Mini‑LED gives brighter vivid images, and OLED offers the best contrast and blacks but can cost more and may need more care against static logos.

Picture quality features

Look for proper HDR support (at least HDR10, with Dolby Vision as a bonus) because it improves brightness, contrast, and colour realism. For sports and gaming, a higher refresh rate (ideally 120 Hz) and low input lag make motion look smoother and controls feel more responsive.

Smart platform and ports

Check the smart OS (Google TV, Tizen, webOS, etc.) and make sure it has the apps you actually use like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and local OTT services. Also confirm enough HDMI ports (preferably HDMI 2.1 for new consoles), USB, and eARC if you plan to add a soundbar or home theater later.

Brand, reviews, and warranty

Once you shortlist 2–3 models, compare expert reviews and user feedback for brightness, black levels, motion handling, and reliability instead of only looking at specs. Finally, compare total value: price, performance, brand support in your country, and extended warranty options if you want long‑term peace of mind
